CPC - Adwords Phone Conversion Tracking


Analytics is becoming more and more important across all industries. In many cases the use of analytics is what makes you better than your competition. Most of my experience with digital analytics comes from working with eCommerce stores using the popular Google Analytics. Within Google Analytics you have a plethora of tools at your disposal. You can segment your traffic and see how each area is performing or you can create custom reports to see the effects of your SEO efforts. One of the awesome areas of Google Analytics is to see your CPC and CPM costs and revenue.

               
 I would like to focus a bit on how CPC and CPM models work. In general, a CPC is when a customer sees one of your ads/banners and clicks on it. When that happens you are charged a fee for that click. That fee in most cases was decided with your bidding and in the auction process of listing your ad. In a CPM model you pay for the view of the ad whether or not they click on it. This is called an impression. After the customer comes to your site you then are able to track them all the way till they leave of the transaction is complete. Seems fine right? Well consider this example. Customer “A” clicks your ad and you are charged $1. Customer A continues browsing the website and decides to make a purchase. He adds the product to cart and checks out. We now see in our analytics that we had 1 visit, 1 conversion, and spent $1 on advertising. Customer “B” sees the same ad and clicks on it. We are again charged another fee but this time is was only $0.75. Customer B continues to browse the site and finally decides on an item he wants to purchase. However before making the purchase he wanted to ask the company a few questions about the product. He calls their 1-800 number, gets his questions answered, then when asked by the store associate if he would like him to place his order for him over the phone he answers yes. Well now when we look at our analytics tracking we see 2 visits, 1 conversion, and $1.75 spent on advertising. Do you see the problem? Because customer “B” ended up placing his order over the phone we were not able to record the transaction in our analytics.

                The scenario above is a very common problem with most companies with online sales. Many don’t even know this is a problem.  We have spent days searching for the best solutions. Let me share a personal experience with this problem. At my work we were in dire need of a marketing manager to help manage our CPC and other marketing avenues. We decided on a recent grad to take over our marketing and he began revamping all our campaigns. He would look at some campaigns in Google Analytic and noticed many where we were spending over $300 a day and only had one or two conversion during the day. Seeing this he immediately stopped all campaigns that fit into this scenario. The next day we noticed that our sales were significantly lower. We figured it must have been just one of those days. The second day was the same. We then went into panic mode and revisited our Google Analytics and everything looked fine. The only area that significantly changes was our call traffic/revenue. After further digging we realized what this new marketer did and enabled the campaigns that he had disabled. Most of these campaigns were for $2000+ priced products and our customers preferred to call in first before placing their order.  Being able to accurately track your advertising costs and success is crucial to be successful in a competitive marketplace. In our industry anyone can open shop in their garage and begin selling products at a fraction of the cost. But because they have no expertise with CPC and accurately using analytics they quickly burn out of cash and go out of business.

                Many sources (Blue Corona) state that CPC and other paid forms of traffic generate 12 times the amount of phone leads compared to natural organic traffic. In our case we have found it to be around 7 times greater than organic leads. To help with phone tracking there are a few solutions to help mitigate the lack of data tracking in this area. Some are better than others.

1.                One partial solution is to have each customer service rep ask the customer how they found out about the company, then mark the source of the order in the company’s internal system. This is the cheapest way to get a basic idea of where the majority of your phone calls come from. However how many people know where or not they click on one of our CPC ads? In most cases they won’t know and just say they found you on Google. For some business this may be an ok solution especially when you can determine phone leads from different avenues. This would help know what people searched for you online compared to calling from a phone book. When creating your reports from Google Analytics or what every analytics solution you use you will have to look at your information you gathered from inbound phone calls. This may work for some industries.

2.                Depending on your companies resources you can purchased multiple phone numbers and assign a phone number to each campaign or if possible each advertisement. Through simple on page JavaScript you can easily change phone numbers across your website based on the advertisement clicked on. This makes it so when they decide to call in they will call in directly though the number associated to that campaign. The customer service agent then records the phone number from which the order originated. You would then combine this with your Google Analytics reports to get a good idea of how each campaign is working. Another approach to this is to direct the customer to an online receipt after they have placed their order. Since the receipt is online your PPC/CPC tracking script can report the conversion. However, you are relying on the customer to visit the receipt page. (How to Track Sales for your PPC Campaigns)

3.                Again, depending on your company’s resources you can outsource this to a tracking company. They will give you multiple numbers and handle the on page phone numbers to work with the origination of the customer. When the customer calls in, the agent is provided with and ID to enter after the order is placed with then ties back into the companies Google Analytics. This is the easiest solution and most expensive.

We decided to go with option 2 as we couldn’t justify the monthly costs of option 3. We found it very easy to implement and only apply it to our bread and butter campaigns. Don’t feel this has to be done for each campaign. In most cases you store makes 80%-90% of its revenue though a few campaigns. These are the ones you want to spend your time on. We have our agents at the end of each order select a box on the confirmation screen of which # they called from. We are then able to get helpful information we can then use to determine the success of each campaign and get an edge over our competitors, especially on CPC.

With technology moving more and more towards mobile devices it opens more opportunities with phone conversion tracking since they are likely to click on your phone number using their mobile device. Knowing the problem is half the battle. There is not a simple generic fit all solution for each industry. However, with a little creativity and planning you can get ahead of your competition and more effectively market online.

Have We Seen the Death of Online Privacy?




There are moral and ethical issues concerning online privacy. Make no mistake about it: in this new digital era, we live in a state of constant surveillance.  There are hundreds of advertising and tracking companies that follow everything we do online. The articles we read, the videos we watch, the sites we visit, and the social comments we make are all being tracked and analyzed. For this reason, nearly every person with a computer should be thinking about how to protect his or her sensitive information.

In the early days of the Internet, users could hide under fake names or nicknames. Most people didn’t enter their actual location because there were “creepy people” out there in cyberspace that you were “supposed to hide from.” Along came Facebook, which wasn’t interested in your nickname. Instead, it wanted your real name and birthdate. Twitter soon followed suit. Google has shared pretty much everything you’ve ever told one of its services with the rest of the Google product family. If you add cookies, IP addresses, tracking share buttons, and location-based sharing to the mix, it’s a wonder “creepy people” haven’t found you yet.



With the current stage of the digital realm, you can’t tweet about your life, check in, write a controversial blog, or run a web business and still expect privacy. You can only hope to contain it. However, someone is eventually going to Google you, and Google is eventually going to help tie all the information together. You have to prepare for and make peace with your digital life being “out there” and understand that you might have to deal with the possible consequences of someone finding it.

Privacy in the digital age means a lot of things to a lot of people. Some people fret about the privacy controls on social networks, some worry about the companies that track their online behavior, and others are concerned about government surveillance. But, the private and/or public discussion to date has focused almost exclusively on privacy and worry. New technologies that cause disruption have often led to collective concern about privacy.

One of these new privacy-disruptive technologies is Big Data. With companies competing to acquire and analyze data at an astonishing pace, this new world of data collection is able to help build insights into Internet-user behavior. This deep analysis mines even the most personal information associated with user actions. Big Data can assemble this information into an intimate picture of the people it relies on for raw data.



Google searches, Facebook posts, YouTube videos, Pinterest posts, and Twitter messages, for example, make it possible to measure behavior in fine detail - sometimes even as it happens. Big Data is how Target's Guest Relations Analytics accidentally revealed a teenaged girl was pregnant to her father. The store's data collectors used information about her purchasing habits to predict her pregnancy - even though she did not explicitly reveal the information to Target or to her parents. With this newly mined data, Target sent her a pamphlet about upcoming parenthood. This pointed information revealed the undisclosed pregnancy to her shocked and uninformed parents.

Because of cases like this, it would be naive to think targeted ads aren't already happening and not to expect continued increases in targeted advertising. These sites will turn to their valuable data to boost revenue. The price of storing and analyzing data is also dropping exponentially and keeping that data hidden is a hopeless task. With advertisers demanding more targeted ads, the mining of personal data to pinpoint consumer desires is quickly becoming more rampant.

This online data can be combined with offline data like our voting record, employment history, and marriage licenses to build an extremely detailed profile. Companies like Facebook already scan the contents of photos and private messages for Homeland Security “risk words” like “infection,” “body scanner,” or “hacker” and turn them over to law enforcement. Even if you delete your embarrassing Facebook posts, companies like Social Intelligence sell the past 7 years of your posts. The wireless companies you pay for mobile service turn over 1.3 million customer records to law enforcement each year - which include texts and your phone’s GPS location.

Although it may seem daunting, there are steps that can be taken to minimize the depletion of your online privacy. A few of these steps include enabling private browsing, creating a “clean” email as well as a separate “spam” email address, examining the privacy policy of sites you agree to use, and managing what personal information you’re posting online. For most users, these are extra steps are viewed as unnecessary. However, if you’re interested in maintaining some semblance of privacy online, these steps are necessary. Otherwise, it would be prudent to realize that most of what you do online can – in many ways – be considered to be publicly accessible information.

Embrace and Adapt to the Changes


The dirty secret of the Web is that the "free" content and services which consumers enjoy come with a hidden price - revealing consumers own private data. Online advertising constantly fights against anonymity and pseudonymity. Advertisers are continuously trying to learn everything about web users, to unmask them, and peel away layers of demographic info, interests, and behaviors. For the most part, we've adjusted to this shift in the new technology era. The sooner we realize we are better off learning to manage our privacy than fight against the lack of it, the sooner we can get back to enjoying the internet. There will always be emerging changes. As we have in the past, we will continue to adjust and adapt.

     There is no arguing that digital analytics helps a business maximize the performance (by whatever criteria they choose to measure this) of their online presence. But what are businesses supposed to do about their retail settings? Well, the answer to that is simple (or seemingly so): Digitize it!

      Simply put, the behavior of customers in retail stores can be viewed as being very similar to the behavior of visitors. They arrive, they may leave, they may wander and browse, they may view a particular item, compare it to another, etc. In the end, they either proceed to the check-out with their shopping cart or abandon it. See, even the terms used are the same! We need to find a way to track a physical customer's activity in a store to apply some useful analysis. Unfortunately, the usual three exit questions are insufficient:

  • Did you find everything you were looking for today?
  • How did you hear about us?
  • Would you mind filling out a brief online survey in exchange for a $X.XX savings on your next visit?
These are all helpful and useful, but they don't offer the depth that current digital analytics provide in the online world. Enter the realm of In-Store Analytics!


     Online Digital analytics offer information such as where someone clicked, how much time they spent, where it was spent it and then what purchases were made.

     So ... how do they do it? There are several technologies at play here. I will discuss a few of these.
     Just a few companies with solutions in this area are:



     These companies offer a mix of different tracking modalities, some of these will be discussed here.


     Video: a series of cameras located around the store and connected to the monitoring system. When a customer enters, they are scanned and registered on the system along with their entry time facial recognition software can give them a unique identification to follow as they work their way around the store (as a side note, this information can be stored to track return visits). The system can then track their whole behavior throughout the retail visit. The system can track where you walked, where you lingered, WHERE YOU LOOKED! If a shopper comes in and leaves without lingering anywhere - BOUNCE. If a customer fills a cart then leaves it - CART ABANDON. If a customer leaves with an item not paid for - SHOPLIFTING!!!(ok not a parallel to online, but useful in loss prevention - remember the facial registration?). When a person checks out, they may provide personal information. This can be linked to their facial identity. With this information combined with their purchases, the areas they browsed, their email address (if provided), previous purchases, membership in a loyalty club, etc. Can be used to customize offers and content than can be served to them via a variety of channels.

     RFID tags: Another way to visualize consumer motion and behavior around a retail space would be to use a series of sensors and RFID tags. With sensors placed throughout the retail space, RFID tags can be placed on shopping carts, baskets, merchandise tags, etc. By tracking the motion of these tags around the store, much of the same data than could be retrieved from the video option can be gleaned as well. Timing on a cart or basket begins with the removal of the cart from the corral. Timing ends with return to corral or with proximity to checkout. The time spent lingering at any given place can be recorded and logged for analysis or even real-time viewing. If an even greater depth of information is desired, a sensor can even be placed on the cart. This way, the system could even track what items were placed in or discarded from the cart. This can be very telling if an item is discarded and replaced with another similar one (for re-shelving purposes, it can even tell clerks where a removed item was left). If it is a store with a customer loyalty program, the loyalty card can be tagged with an RFID device now allowing specific tracking of identified customers. Again with this information, specific customized deals and information can be served to the customer later.


     The most intriguing, in my opinion, of the technologies is that of Smartphone Tracking. As has been discussed widely elsewhere in this blog, the sheer number and prevalence is staggering. More importantly, most of these devices are WiFi enabled. Most of the phone holders have limited data plans and so use WiFi at home or whenever they can. Most of us don't turn off our WiFi capability when we leave home. Therefore many people entering a retail establishment have a personal WiFi device in the "on" mode in their possession. What many people don't realize is that these devices send out a periodic "ping" looking for nearby WiFi. This ping contains some information including the device's MAC address. This can be detected and, with the right sensors, tracked. This tracking is accomplished with sensors attached to the store's network and placed in various areas around the store. This even allows behavior outside the store to be tracked! A retailer can see how effective their window display is at attracting customers. Since the ping is automatic there is no opt-in or out issue. On the other hand, if the store provides a free WiFi service in the store, even more personal information can be linked. If
the user logs in with their customer loyalty account?!?! You get the idea.

     So, what's the big deal? These systems turn a physical Brick & Mortar retail space into a digitally active analog for a web site. Now that that is done, the motivations and actions are the same as in the online world. The goal remains to get people into the store (site) view your merchandise (view pages and content) and make purchases(conversions). This is the case at least in retail although other brick & mortar settings can make use of this as well. They just need different conversions. A few examples would include a library, a medical setting, a conference, etc. For now, I'll only address commercial instances.

Eye Tracking
     One of the things site administrators are trying to achieve through analytics is to determine where people are looking on their site - literally - where they are looking. using eye tracking, the places an eye looks, tracks to and lingers can be mapped. This helps give insights as to what display content is effective. The site can then be adjusted to maximize effectiveness. This is easily applied to a store. With the previously discussed technology, you can readily track location and location density in store. Furthermore, depending on the technology, you can track which lingers led to which purchases. Another specific example of this utility is best illustrated with the following scenario:

     Imagine a popular retail electronics chain. For the sake of argument let's call it Superlative Purchase. They have several large live game console displays near the game consoles for sale. People can come over and play on them. These displays use up a fair amount of maintenance, display real estate and to a small extent power. These systems can track the amount of time people (and potentially specific people) spend on the console and determine whether or not this playtime led to a purchase. If it leads to purchases, then keep it. If no purchases happen from this feature, the space could be shifted to more productive use.

     This, of course is not the only use of these analytic tools. They can be used for all of the purposes and with most of the measures that online provides. in some cases more. If there is an area in the store of chronic bottleneck, this can be mitigates. With the use of real-time heat mapping, if there is a temporary bottleneck, it can be addressed immediately. There are a couple of exceptions. There is a great deal of information in online analytics. For example, there is geographical information with website visits. This is not necessarily the case in-store unless the shopper fills out a loyalty membership form or is already a member. On the other hand, in all likelihood, in store visits are from local customers. Another lacking measure is that of referring site. This, however, can be mitigated by the second question at the beginning of this article. Furthermore, there are several measurements of referral sources that can be integrated from various nonline sources such as offer codes, coupons, etc.

     In conclusion, it is clear that there are many benefits of being able to leverage web analytics. Now, with the addition of some technology, physical stores can apply some of the same powerful analytics to obtain insights to improve their businesses. They can even be beneficial to stores without an online presence. On the other hand, with an online store as well, the information can be combined, integrated and information can be served to improve conversions and customer experience even more. A few different technologies have been discussed. No one technology alone will provide as deep a set of data as a combination of them. In fact the above listed companies all use a mix of these (and other) technologies.

Bringing Traffic Your Way


You just created that awesome blog site, and your family and friends are proud of you and your work. They come to visit the site a few times a week, reading and commenting on your posts; they actually let you know how cool you are for writing these posts! 
But, you want to tell the world about your blog. You want to start driving traffic your way! Well, I’m going to help you with some cool ideas so your blog can get your first 1 million hits.

 Social Media Working for You 

You did it! Your blog is looking pretty awesome. You have created a cool brand and now you’re ready to take it to the next level. Here’s where social media can help immensely. Go to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+ to create your precious brand personal accounts. Even if you believe your blog won’t be a success right away, is better to avoid headaches by creating your own accounts on every social networking site.
Now that you have created accounts on these, it’s time to start sharing every post to them. Make sure to invite friends to like or join your name so they receive notifications and or emails every time you post a new blog.



Using Analytics to Track Everything

Install Analytics Tools on your blog and let it collect data. Tools like Google Analytics and Adobe Site Catalyst can be installed on the back-end of your blog. These tools track everything from new visits, to time spent on pages. Analytics can also track, where your visits are coming from, if the visitor landed on your blog by an organic search(1) or by a paid keyword(2). These tools can be configured to your liking and they provide detailed information in reports that can be customized and delivered automatically. 
If you have been following this post from the beginning, you should have a Google+ account. That’s all you need to create a Google Analytics account. The interface is very simple and Google provide great documentation for it. Study Your Audience and Write Accordingly to What They Want

Finish your blog posts with specific questions; you’re going to start knowing your visitors based on the answers you get.
You can also try sending surveys via email or post these surveys along with your blog post. This is a quick way to understand what your visitors want. You can start writing about what your visitors wants once you get the necessary data about them.
Again, use social media to interact with your users. Learn from them and become their friend. Participate in communities your visitors visit frequently and learn as much as you can from them.

Use Great Designs on Your Website

Make sure you visit different blog sites to see and learn the trends used. Stay away from using bright colors that can cause temporal blindness on your audience, and use one font type for your posts. Use pictures and videos related to what you’re writing about and listen to feedback from your visitors.

Reply to Comments

Interacting with your audience is just another way to increase traffic to your site.  Make sure you interact with them when they leave a comment. Even if it’s a simple “thank you,” from your part; they will be grateful and come back to visit your blog. Replying to the audience comments creates a great discussion environment. Try to avoid religion or political comments unless your blog was created for these purposes.

We talked about using social media to interact with people and expand your blog to different audiences. We also talked about creating a Google Analytics account and installing these tools in the back-end to learn about your audience. Along with that, we took a look at studying your audience, using great designs and interacting with your visitors. I hope I was able to help you and my words encourage you to start writing about the things you really love.

that will improve your tracking ablities

There is some useful information that Google excludes from analytics. The downside of any free application is that you can only customize the information that is provided to you. So, since the genesis of Google Analytics, coders have been coming up with ways to gather additional information. The following are three hacks that will provide a more thorough experience with Google's analytics suite.

#1 Tracking Outbound Links

When a user leaves your website by clicking on an outbound link, Google does not track how many users click on them. This leaves you wondering how successful your outbound links are. The following hack will allow you to track how many clicks are happening on each link:

1) Set up Event Tracking in your Analytics Tracking code.
You're going to add the following line to the tracking code for your pages after the page tracking object is set up:

    var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker('UA-XXXXX-X');
    pageTracker._trackPageview();


2) Add JavaScript in the <head> of your document to delay the outbound click.
Not to worry...this delay is only a fraction of a second and will hardly be noticeable by the user. But the delay does provide the browser more time load the tracking code. Without this delay, the user may click on the outgoing link before the tracking code loads, in which case the event isn't going to get recorded. Here's the JavaScript code you'll add in the <head> section (NOTE: this script assumes you will use your own tracking code ID):

3) Update the outbound links you want to track to call the new function without following the link first.
For example, to log every click on a particular link to www.someothersite.com, you would use the _trackEvent() method in the link's <a> tag, like so:

#2 Tracking Lost Users

The bigger your website gets, the more likely it is that your user will land on a 404. This creates a bad user experience, and the more it happens the more upset users you'll have. This hack will help you track how often users land on pages that don't exist, so you can find and fix the issues. 

Setup: Placing The GATC In Your Error 404'S, 500'S, Etc.

To track error pages you will need to have the Google Analytics Tracking Code (GATC) added to your error page template(s) (contact your webmaster to complete this task). Without the tracking code on the error pages you will not be able report on these pages or find their associated broken links.
As a reference, here is the code:

Note: Be sure to use your own number under gat.getTracker()
With the GATC on your error pages they will now be tracked as page views. Since these error pages will be considered page views you will want to create a filter that will allow you to view them in isolation from each other.
One important aspect to setting up your error report properly is the naming convention that you use for your error pages' in the HTML "title" tag. All of the title tags need to be created in a consistent manner so that a single filter will be able to identify them. An example title tag would be: Error 404 Page.
For other errors you would just replace the '404' with the appropriate error number. An example of a custom filter that will track the above format would be:
Filter Type: Advanced
Field A -> Extract A | Page Title | (Error [0-9][0-9][0-9].+)
Field B -> Extract B | Request URI | (.*)
Output To -> Constructor | Request URI | $A1$B1
Field A Required: Yes
Field B Required: Yes
Override Output Field: Yes
Case Sensitive: No
An alternative version of the Field A regular expression is: (Error [0-9]{3}.+) Once you have the GATC on your error pages and set up your filter to help differentiate the different type of error pages from each other it is time to figure out where your error pages are and which links (broken links) sent your visitors to these nonexistent pages.

Creating The Report In Top Content

To create your error pages report you will go to the top content report and then filter by the term "error" (assuming you had this word in your error page title tags as we did above). This will bring up all of your error pages and let you see the associated Content Performance metrics associated with them (pageviews, unique pageviews, bounce rate...)
Now that you have identified the error pages we need to track down the broken links that created the error. To do this you will click on an error page in the report to view the content details of that page. From the content details page you will then click on the "Navigation Summary" link on the right side. Once on the Navigation Summary page you will be able to see the page your visitor was on prior to visiting your error page. A quick visit to these pages and you should be able to figure out where your broken links are. Sometimes the pages with the broken links will not be within your site and you will need to contact someone else and ask them to correct the link, or set up a 301 redirect on your site to redirect the inbound visitor to the correct URL.
This is a great report for your webmaster or IT team to review regularly so that you can fix broken links as quickly as possible and reduce the number of error pages that your visitors will see.
